Wisconsin Oversize Load / Pilot Car Requirements
Single Trip Permit General Conditions

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 48' 0"
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
Sunrise to sunset Monday - Friday & Saturday until noon
Night time travel is permitted for loads not exceeding 100′ long, 12′ wide or 13′ 6″ high
Loads less than this are allowed to travel all weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day
Loads over 100′ long, 12′ wide, 13′ 6″ high may only travel until noon on Saturday
Oversize vehicles exceeding these dimensions may not travel from sunset to sunrise, after 4pm on Friday from the 4th Friday in May to Labor Day and during the period beginning at noon on the day preceding every holiday and continuing until sunrise on the day following the holiday
Travel restricted on New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day

Wisconsin Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
2 Lane Highways:
Over 15′ up to 16′ wide requires 1 pilot car
Over 16′ wide requires 2 pilot cars
Over 125′ long requires 2 pilot cars
When any part of the load or vehicle extends beyond the left of roadway centerline it requires 1 pilot car
On any highway designated by permit 1 or more pilot cars are required
Multi - Lane Highways:
Same as 2 lane except when any part of the vehicle or load extends beyond the left of the right hand lane
Mobile/Modular Homes:
Over 14′ wide (on certain highways)requires 1 pilot car
Over 16′ wide requires 1 pilot car & 1 police escort

Wisconsin Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Vehicle size not specified in regulations
"OVERSIZE LOAD" sign (5′ x 12″) with black letters (10″ high and 1½″ wide brush stroke) on a solid yellow or amber background, mounted on the roof of vehicle
2 amber warning lights mounted on or above the vehicle roof. Single or multiple pulse strobe light with a flash/pulse rate or rotate between 30 & 120 times per minute with visibility of 500′ at 360 degrees
Two bright red or orange flags at least 18″ square on a short staff mounted on the front bumper (one on each side)
Bright red or orange flag (18″ square)

Wisconsin Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years of age
Must have a valid drivers license issued to the vehicle's operator
Non-residents must have a valid license or certification issued in another jurisdiction that allows that person to operate a pilot car in that jurisdiction
