Virginia Hauling Permit Manual

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 53' 0"
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
1/2 hour after sunrise to 1/2 hour before sunset, Monday - Friday
1/2 hour after sunrise until noon on Saturday, no Sunday travel
Curfews in corporate limits of cities/towns are from 7am - 9am & 4pm - 6pm except for overheight only, overweight only or combination (curfews will be attached to permits for special conditions travel)
Travel prohibited on New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day

Virginia Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
One front and one rear escort is required on noninterstate routes when the permitted load exceeds 12 feet in width.
One rear escort is required on interstate routes when the permitted load exceeds 12 feet in width.
Two front and one rear escorts are required on noninterstate routes when the permitted load exceeds 14 feet in width.
One front and one rear escort is required on interstate routes when the permitted load exceeds 14 feet in width.
Over 85′ long on all 2&3 lane roads require 1 pilot car
Over 12′ wide or 75′ long on 2 lane roads require flashing amber lights or escorts with flashing amber lights
Over 12′ wide through Big Walker Tunnel & East River Mt. Tunnel requires 1 pilot car
Over 10′ wide, 75′ long, 14′ 6″ high on 4 lane roads or interstate (route determines escorts)
Permittee is responsible for all vertical clearances (route determines escorts)

Virginia Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Vehicle size not specified in regulations
Signs (visible day or night) must identify the type of load being escorted (i.e. "WIDE LOAD", "OVERSIZE LOAD", "OVERDIMENSIONAL LOAD", "OVERWEIGHT LOAD"). Signs must have black letters 10″ x 1½″ & must be 60″ long by 12″ high
Must have flashing amber lights with strobe or rotating sealed beam, 5″ diameter base and 4″ lens height

Virginia Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Virginia certification mandatory for all escort drivers regardless of residency for loads 12′ to 14′ wide
Multiple choice questions on escort driver's test based on Virginia driver's manual & Virginia Hauling Permit Manual
Test may be taken at any of the 14 DOT offices in Virginia (re-testing required to remain certified before expiration date on the back of certification card
