Utah Oversize Load / Pilot Car Requirements
General Oversize Permit Provisions

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 14' 0"
Length: Semi-trailer over 48' 0"
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset (7 days a week)
Loads under 10′ wide or 92′ long and legal height may travel 24/7
Travel prohibited on New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Pioneer Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day (if the holiday falls on friday, no travel from 2pm Thursday until daylight on Monday. If the holiday falls on Monday, no travel from 2pm on friday until daylight on Tuesday) When the holiday falls on any other weekday, no travel from 2pm on the day before the holiday until daylight of the day after the holiday
Travel prohibited during days of high traffic volumes, (example: hunting season on Saturday closest to October 20)

Utah Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
12′ wide requires 1 pilot car
16′ wide requires 2 pilot cars
Over 17′ wide requires 2 pilot cars plus 2 police escorts
Over 105′ up to 120′ long requires 1 pilot car
Over 120′ long requires 2 pilot cars
Combo of 13′ wide or greater and 90′ long or greater requires 1 pilot car
16′ high or greater requires 2 pilot cars
Over 17′ high requires 1 pilot car with high pole & police escort
Over 17′ 6′ high requires 2 pilot cars & police escort (Notify utility company)
30′ overhang or greater requires 1 pilot car
Unable to maintain minimum posted speed requires 2 pilot cars
4 or More Lanes:
Same as above with the following acceptions:
Over 14′ wide requires 1 pilot car
95′ long or greater requires 1 pilot car
105′ long or greater on intermittent sections of 4 lane & 2 lane requires 2 pilot cars
Over 16′ 6″ high requires 2 pilot cars

Utah Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
95″ minimum wheelbase, 12,000 lb. maximum weight
"OVERSIZE LOAD" sign (5′ X 10″) with black letters (8″ high with 1″ brush stroke) on yellow background, mounted on top of vehicle
Two 6″ minimum amber warning lights, mounted on each side of sign or, an AAMVA approved amber rotating, oscillating or flashing beacon/light bar mounted on top of the vehicle and visible for 360 degrees
Two red flags (not orange) mounted at each end of sign or light bar atop vehicle
CB or two way radio (4 watts minimum) capable of transmitting 1/2 mile
"STOP/SLOW" paddle sign (24" minimum)
Nine reflective triangles
Eight burning road flares or approved alternative
Three orange traffic cones (18″ minimum)
An orange hard hat & Orange vest
Flashlight with minimum 1 1/2″ lens & red or orange cone (9″ min)
Fire extinguisher and first aid kit
A spare "OVERSIZE LOAD" sign (7′ x 18″)
Spare tire, jack & lug wrench

Utah Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Minimum 18 years of age with a valid drivers license for the State in which the driver resides
Certification card will be issued by an authorized certification program (a list of providers can be obtained by calling 801-965-4508), valid for 4 years, then 1 additional 4 year certification may be obtained by mail or on-line, provide a current MVR within 30 days
Current certification will be honored through the expiration date
Non resident drivers may operate as a certified escort with another States certification provided the course meets the minimum requirements outlined by UDOT
UDOT currently recognizes certifications from Washington, North Carolina, Colorado, Oklahoma & Florida
