Oversize/Overweight Permit Rules & Regulations

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 14' 0"
Length: Semi-trailer over 59' 0"
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset
Vehicles under 10′ wide or 100′ long may operate on the interstate 24/7
24 hour movement is allowed with front and rear escorts when moving self-propelled mobile cranes that are 10′ 6″ wide or less, 14′ high or less, and 95′ long or less
24 hour movement is allowed with front and rear escorts when moving self-propelled well servicing units that are 9′ wide or less, 14′ high or less, and 65′ long or less
Travel prohibited for loads over 14′ wide, 16′ high & 110′ long on New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day

Texas Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
14′ to 16′ wide requires 1 pilot car
Over 16′ wide requires 2 pilot cars
Over 20′ wide requires a route survey
Over 85′ long requires 1 pilot car
Over 110′ to 125′ long requires 1 pilot car
Over 125′ long requires 2 pilot cars
Over 20′ to 30′ rear overhang requires 1 pilot car
Over 30′ rear overhang requires 2 pilot cars plus special approval
Over 17′ high requires 1 pilot car with height pole (must contact utility companies involoved)
Over 18′ high requires 2 pilot cars (with height pole)
Over 19′ high requires a route survey
Manufactured Homes:
Over 16′ to 18′ wide requires 1 pilot car
Over 18′ wide (on all highways) requires 2 pilot cars

Texas Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Single unit with GVW of 1,000 lb. min. to 10,000 lb. maximum
"OVERSIZE LOAD" or "WIDE LOAD" sign mounted on either the roof of the vehicle or the front & rear. Must be visible from both front and rear. Minimum size (5′ X 12″) with black letters (8″ high with 1.41″ brush stroke) on yellow background
2 flashing or 1 rotating amber light, 8″ diameter, top mounted & visible 360 degrees
CB or two way radio
