Oversize/Overweight Permit Rules & Regulations

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 50' 0"
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
Sunrise to sunset, Monday - Saturday (no Sunday Travel)
Overweight only may operate 24/7
Travel restrictions for loads 12′ 6″ wide and/or 85′ long between the hours of 7am - 9am & 4pm - 6pm (Monday - Friday) within any city limits or any heavily traveled adjoining commercial or residential areas
Travel prohibited on New Years Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day
Permit Office closed on the above holidays plus Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Columus Day, Veteran's Day & the day after Thanksgiving

Tennesee Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
10′ to 12′ wide (if pavement is under 20′ wide) requires 1 pilot car
12′ 6″ to 14′ wide requires 1 pilot car
Over 14′ to 16′ wide requires 2 pilot cars
Over 85′ long requires 1 pilot car
Over 120′ long requires 2 pilot cars
Over 15′ high requires 1 pilot car
Flagperson required on bridges under 20′ wide

Tennesee Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Passenger car or pickup truck
"OVERSIZE LOAD" sign (mounted on bumper or roof) with black letters (10″ high X 1 1/2″ brush stroke) on yellow background, visible from front & rear, made of metal, durable wood, cloth or heavy canvas (if it can be securely fastened to the vehicle with a flat surface backing up the entire area of the sign)
Rotating or strobe type amber light(s) visible from 500′, place horizontal & visible 360 degrees
Red or fluorescent orange flags (18″ square min) mounted at 40 - 70 degree angle on the vehicle roof
CB or two way radio
Two 5 lb. fire extinguishers
"STOP/GO" paddle (18″ with 6″ letters)
Hard hat & orange safety jacket/vest/shirt
Hand held red flag (18″ square)
Two "OVERSIZE LOAD" banners (black letters on yellow background)

Tennesee Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Pilot vehicle is not allowed to cross the truck scales at weigh station
