Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 14' 0"
Length: Semi-trailer over 53' 0"
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset
Loads not exceeding 10′ wide or 16′ 6″ high may travel on the interstate highways continuously
Overweight only may operate 24/7

South Dakota Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
State Highways:
Over 20′ wide requires 1 pilot car
On Interstate:
Over 16′ wide requires 1 pilot car (in Black Hills area see permit)
Over 10′ wide (in the Black Hills area) requires 1 pilot car
The permit authority determines if and when pilot cars are required for transport of Mobile/Modular homes

South Dakota Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Licensed motor vehicle, no motorcycles
"WIDE LOAD AHEAD" sign (mounted on front of the leading pilot car) or "WIDE LONG LOAD" sign (mounted on the rear of the trailing pilot car) in letters 12″
Revolving (or 2-2 way flashing) amber lights a minimum of 4″ in diameter
Bright red or orange flags (12″ square min) mounted on brackets or standards on each side of the sign
No additional equipment is specified in the requirements
