Size, Weight, and Load Limits

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 48' 6"  (53′ on interstates & on non-interstates with prior approval) call (401) 588-3020 ext 2034
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset, travel prohibited on weekend
Travel prohibited on New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Victory Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day (If a holiday falls on Sunday, the following Monday is also restricted. If the holiday falls on Saturday, the previous Friday is restricted after noon. If a holiday falls on a weekday, travel is allowed up to noon on the day before the holiday)
Permit Office is closed for the above holidays plus Martin Luther King Day & Election Day

Rhode Island Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
Over 12′ up to 14′ 6″ wide requires 1 pilot car
Over 14′ 6″ wide requires 2 pilot cars
Over 80′ up to 90′ long requires 1 pilot car
Over 90′ long requires 2 pilot cars
Over 15′ overhang requires 1 pilot car
Over 15′ infrequent overhang (example: 2 lane hyw with 12′ or greater width) requires 2 pilot cars
Over 14′ high requires 1 pilot car
Building with police escort requires 2 pilot cars
12′ or greater width for cranes moving on the interstate requires 2 pilot cars

Rhode Island Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
A compact car is the minimum accepted size
"OVERSIZE LOAD" sign on front and/or rear of vehicle depending on vehicle position & load
Yellow lights (visible from the front & rear) in operation above the highest point on the vehicle
Flags on vehicle are not stipulated in the requirements
CB or two way radio
