Oversize and Overweight Loads and Vehicles

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 0"   (8' 6" on numbered routes, unless posted)
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 53' 0"
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
Sunrise to sunset in non-urbanized areas, Saturday until noon in non-urbanized areas, no Sunday travel except in non-urbanized areas
If not oversize and GVW does not exceed 100,000 lbs., vehicles operating at prevailing speeds may operate continuously, except during periods of inclement weather or during holidays
Travel prohibited on New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day (travel prohibited after noon on the weekday preceding those holidays until 9am on the weekday following the holiday or as specified on the permit)

Pennsylvania Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
All Highways:
Over 13′ wide requires 1 pilot car
Over 16′ wide requires police escort
Over 90′ long requires 1 pilot car
Over 160′ long requires police escort
Over 15′ rear overhang requires 1 pilot car
Over 14′ 6″ high requires 1 pilot car with height pole
Over 201,000 lbs. requires police escort
Overweight loads required to travel at reduced speeds over bridges require 1 pilot car
Overweight if permit requires the load must be the only vehicle on a bridge or to occupy more than 1 lane to cross on a 2 directional bridge requires 2 pilot cars
If the bridge supports only 1 lane of traffic 1 pilot car is required
Urban Areas:
Oversize loads allowed to run from 3am to sunrise require 2 pilot cars
Permitted loads unable to run 40 mph on limited access highways allowed between 9am and 4pm require 1 pilot car
Non-Urbanized Areas:
Permitted loads unable to maintain 40 mph on limited access highways require 1 pilot car

Pennsylvania Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
No size specified in regulations
"OVERSIZE LOAD" sign (5′ X 12″) with black letters (8″ high) on yellow background mounted on front and/or rear of vehicle
Minimum of 1 or 2 flashing lights mounted on top of vehicle
Flags on vehicle are not stipulated in the requirements
CB or two way radio

Pennsylvania Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Proof of liability insurance in the combined amount of $1,000,000
Legislation is pending regarding certification of escorts
