New York Oversize Load / Pilot Car Requirements
Guidlines for Special Hauling Permit Requirements

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 0" (8′ 6″ on designated truck access highways and highways outside NYC with 10′ or more lane widths)
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 48' 0" (53′ trailers allowed on designated access highways only)
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (22,400 lbs. single axle or 36,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset (Monday - Friday)
OD/OW moves less than 12′ wide & 85′ long that can maintain traffic flow speed are allowed to travel until noon on Saturday
No Sunday travel
Night travel will be required on Long Island for mobiles, modular sections & office trailers wider than 12′
Continuous travel is authorized when the vehicle does not exceed legal dimensions and does not go over 125% of the legal weight
Travel allowed until noon on Saturday if load is under 12′ wide, 72′ long (85′ on approved routes)
Travel prohibited on New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day and from noon the day preceding Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving & Christmas. The day preceding the above holidays only refers to normal working days (Mon - Fri)

New York Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
2 Lane Highways:
Over 12′ wide, 80′ long, 10′ overhang or 14′ high requires 1 pilot car (with height pole for high load)
16′ wide or greater or 140′ long or greater requires 3 pilot cars & Police Escort
100′ long or greater requires 3 pilot cars
16′ high or greater requires 1 pilot car with high pole & Police Escort
Over 200,000 lbs. requires Police Escort
4 Lanes or More:
Over 12′ wide, 80′ long, 10′ overhang or if vehicle is moving slow or speed restrictions are required 1 pilot car is required
18′ wide or greater, or 200′ long or greater requires 3 pilot cars & 1 Police Escort
Over 14′ high requires 1 pilot car with height pole
16′ high or greater requires 1 pilot car (with high pole) & Police Escort
If the vehicle/load is 14' high or over, 100' long or over, or 16' wide or over, a route survey form is required. Route surveys must be performed by NYS Certified Escorts

New York Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
1997 or newer vehicle must have 100″ wheelbase minimum unless utility vehicle
"OVERSIZE LOAD" sign (min. 5′ X 12″) mounted on front and rear or top of vehicle
Flashing/strobe single unit warning light bar (4 lamps minimum) mounted on roof of vehicle. Between 43″ - 52″ long and between 4″ - 8″ high. If flashing lights must have a minimum of 2 lights flashing at 95 per minute. If rotating lights must have a minimum of 2 lights at 150FPM with mirrors (reflective on both sides) placed diagonally between lights with 360 degree visibility from 1000′ using amber dome covers
Red flags required on vehicle
Three red or fluorescent orange flags (minimum 18″ square) on staffs (1 must be weighted)
CB or two way radio
Cell phone (mobile phone)
Stop paddle
Fire extinguisher (Class B,C or larger)
Height pole (if escorting high load)
Three emergency triangles and/or flares
Three emergency flares (for night operations)
State mandated insignia (1 on each side of vehicle)

New York Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Fluorescent vest with certified escort insignia on left chest of vest
Police scanners forbidden
Must be NY certified regardless of residence.
