Permits for Overdimensional or Overweight Vehicles

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 0"   (8′ 6″ wide on designated routes)
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 48' 0" (53′ trailers allowed on designated access highways only)
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (22,400 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
Sunrise to sunset (travel permitted Saturday until noon) No Sunday travel
Overweight only loads are not restricted to times of travel
Travel prohibited on New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day
Permit office is closed on the above holidays plus Martin Luther King Day, Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Good Friday, Columbus Day, Election Day & the day after Thanksgiving

2 Lane Highways:
Over 14′ wide requires 1 pilot car
Over 16′ wide requires 2 pilot cars
Over 100′ long requires 1 pilot car
Over 120′ long requires 2 pilot cars
Over 14′ high requires 1 pilot car
4 or More Lanes:
Over 14′ wide requires 1 pilot car
Over 16′ wide requires 2 pilot cars
Over 100′ long requires 1 pilot car
Over 120′ long requires 2 pilot cars

New Jersey Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
No vehicle specifications stipulated
"OVERSIZE LOAD" or "WIDE LOAD" sign (min. 6′ X 12″) with black letters (10″ high) on yellow background mounted on front and/or rear of vehicle
No lights stipulated
Flags displayed on the front and/or rear corners of vehicle

New Jersey Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
DOT does not permit oversize loads
Trucks are not allowed in the "hammer lane"
