Load/Axle Weight Criteria

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 48' 0" (53′ trailers allowed on designated access highways only)
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (22,400 lbs. single axle or 36,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset
Overweight only loads are not restricted to times of travel
Travel prohibited on New Years Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day
Permit office is closed on the above holidays plus the day after Thanksgiving
If a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday will be considered the holiday. If it falls on a Saturday, the previous Friday will be considered the holiday

New Hampshire Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
All Highways:
12′ wide & over requires 1 pilot car
80′ long & over requires 1 pilot car
Overhang 15′ & over with 12′ width requires 2 pilot cars
Police Escort Required When:
Over 18′ wide & over 100′ long
Mobile/Modular Homes (restricted to 16′ & 95′ long):
12′ wide or less to 14′ 6″ wide (less than 4 lanes) requires 1 pilot car
14′ 6″ to 16′ wide with approved route requires 2 State police +
12′ to 14′ 6″ wide (within 2 miles of an exit from a 4 lane highway) requires 1 pilot car
Over 25′ overhang (front or rear) requires 1 pilot car
All loads greater than 110' Long and/or greater than 13'6” High require a "Physical Route Survey" and/or a "Physical Height Survey" for all routes traveled

New Hampshire Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
No smaller than a compact car or pickup truck
"OVERSIZE LOAD" sign (min. 5′ X 12″) with black letters (10″ high with 1.4″ brush stroke) on yellow background mounted on front or rear of vehicle. Shape may be varied to fit vehicle
Top mounted flashing or rotating amber lights
CB or 2 way radio
No flags are stipulated in regulations
