Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 14' 0"
Length: Semi-trailer over 53' 0"
Weight: Over 105,500 lbs. GVW on State highways, unless posted. 80,000 lbs. GVW on county & local roads (20,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
Sunrise to sunset, night time travel for overweight only. Loads not exceeding 16′ wide or 110′ long may travel Monday - Friday and until noon on Saturday
Travel restricted from noon on New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day

Find a Pilot Car Provider in North Dakota
North Dakota Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
2 Lane Highways:
Over 14′ 6″ to 16′ wide requires 1 pilot car (may use rotating or flashing amber light mounted on vehicle & visible from front and rear for 500′ in lieu of escort)
4 or More Lane Divided Highways:
Over 16′ wide requires 1 pilot car
All Highways:
Over 18′ wide requires official escort (unless exempted by highway patrol)
Over 18′ high requires 1 pilot car (must have written permission from the utility company)
Over 120′ long requires 1 pilot car
Weight of earth moving equipment that exceeds legal axle weights requires 1 pilot car
Weight of any load that exceeds normal allowable weights may require 1 or 2 pilot cars
Mobile/Modular Homes on 2 Lane Highways:
14′ 6″ to 16′ wide requires 1 pilot car
Over 16′ wide requires 2 pilot cars
4 or More Lane Divided Highways:
Over 16′ wide requires 1 pilot car
Maximum allowable width in North Dakota is 18′

North Dakota Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Two axle truck or passenger car only. Must meet requirements of ND Century Code, Title 39
"OVERSIZE LOAD" sign (5′ X 12″) with black letters (8″ high X 1″ brush stroke) on yellow background
Flashing amber lights mounted on the ends of sign or 1 centrally mounted revolving amber light on top of sign
Flags not stipulated in regulations
CB or two way radio

North Dakota Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Valid drivers license and 18 years old minimum
All vehicles not registered in ND must purchase a temporary registration when escorting intraState loads
