Oversize/Overweight Permit Handbook

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 48' 0" (53′ trailers allowed on designated access highways only)
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 38,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
Sunrise to sunset (Monday - Saturday). No Sunday travel for permitted loads with overdimensional and weight in excess of 94,500 lbs.
16′ wide mobile homes travel permitted Monday - Thursday from 9am - 2:30pm
Travel prohibited from noon on the weekday preceding until noon on the weekday after New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day

Find a Pilot Car Provider in North Carolina
North Carolina Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
Overwidth Travel on Multi-lane Highways:
Over 12′ wide requires 1 pilot car
Over 14′ 5″ high requires 1 pilot car with height pole
Over 110′ long (superloads over 100′) requires 1 pilot car
Over 14′ overhang requires 1 pilot car
Over 149,999 lbs. requires 1 pilot car
Multiple pilot cars possible for combination of over-dimensions
16′ wide mobiles with legal height and a maximum of 3″ gutter edge are required to have 2 pilot cars on all controlled access highways
All other multi-lane highways require 3 pilot cars
All 2 lane/2 way roads require 2 pilot cars & police escort (plus proof of final destination)
Over 15′ wide superloads require 3 pilot cars & NC highway patrol
North Carolina Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Not less than 2,000 lbs., load capacity of 17,000 lbs. or less
"OVERSIZE LOAD" or "WIDE LOAD" sign with black letters (10″ high X 1 1/2″ brush stroke) on yellow background mounted on bumper (must extend the entire length of bumper) or roof
Flashing amber lights (rotating sealed beam or strobe) 5″ minimum base, 4″ minimum height, mounted on top of vehicle
Red flags required on vehicle
ID signs or placards (8" X 12" minimum) with name, address & phone number of owner/operator

North Carolina Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Must be certified by NCDOT. 21 years of age or 18 with CDL (Class A) or 18 and been employed as an escort for a minimum of 1 year, being sponsored by employer for certification program, and have completed NSC defensive driving course (required for all applicants)
NCDOT OS/OW Load Escort Vehicle Operator Certification Program requires a minimum score of 75%, it's effective for 4 years and costs $50.00
