Mississippi Oversize Load / Pilot Car Requirements

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 53' 0"
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
1/2 hour after sunrise until 1/2 hour before sunset (travel permitted until 1/2 hour before sunset on Saturday) No Sunday travel
Travel prohibited on New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day (no travel after noon on days preceding holidays)
Permit office is closed for the above holidays plus Martin Luther King Day and the day after Thanksgiving
Travel prohibited for loads in excess of 12′ wide in the major urban areas of Memphis/South Haven, Jackson & the Gulf Coast (except I-10) from 7am - 8:30am & 4:30pm - 5:30pm

Mississippi Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
On all highways:
Over 12′ wide requires 1 pilot car
95′ to 105′ long requires 1 pilot car
Over 105′ long requires 2 pilot cars
15′ or greater overhang requires 1 pilot car
Mobile/Modular Homes:
14′ wide or greater requires 1 pilot car

Mississippi Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
A single motor vehicle
"OVERSIZE LOAD" sign mounted on the front of lead escort and on the rear of rear escort (or front & rear of the single escort)
Flashing or revolving amber light
Must be lighted for nighttime travel
Two red flags mounted on top of vehicle
CB or two way radio

Mississippi Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Escorts must register their insurance with Mississipi being the State certificate holder
