Minnesota Oversize Load / Pilot Car Requirements
OS/OW Trucking in MN Regulations

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 53' 0"
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
2am until 10pm daily
During summer months, travel is prohibited from 2pm on Friday until sunrise on Saturday
Curfew from 7:30am - 8:30am & 4pm - 5:30pm in Duluth
Travel prohibited on New Years Day, Main Fishing Opener, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day (no travel between 2pm on the day before a holiday until sunrise on the day after the holiday or the holiday weekend)
Permit office is closed for the above holidays plus Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Veteran's Day and the day after Thanksgiving
Travel prohibited after 2pm on Fridays and Sundays, starting with the Memorial Day weekend through the Labor Day weekend

Minnesota Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
2 lane highways:
14′ 6″ to 16′ wide on single lanes requires 2 pilot cars (minimum)
Multi-lane divided highways:
14′ 6″ to 16′ wide requires 1 pilot car (minimum)
All highways:
Over 16′ wide requires 2 pilot cars (minimum)
Over 15′ 6″ high requires route survey
95′ to 110′ long requires 1 pilot car (minimum)
Over 110′ long requires 2 pilot cars (minimum)

Minnesota Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Passenger car, station wagon or pickup truck
"WIDE LOAD" or "LONG LOAD" sign (12″ X 60″ minimum) with black letters (8″ high with 1 1/8″ brush stroke) on yellow background, mounted on top of the escort vehicle
Sign shall not extend beyond the line of the fenders on the left side nor more than 6″ beyond the fender line on the right side of the escort vehicle
Single or dual amber light mounted at the top or sides of the sign (at least 5′ above the road surface) shall flash at a rate of 60 - 90 flashes/minute. May be disc or strobe type or rotating beacon, visible/readable from 500′
Must be lighted for nighttime travel
No stipulations for flags in regulations
CB or two way radio

Minnesota Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Minimum 18 years of age
