Michigan Oversize Load / Pilot Car Requirements

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 0"  (8′ 6″ allowed on designated highways only)
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 50' 0" (53′ permitted on designated roads)
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset
Weekend movement is now permitted in Michigan, on a trial basis, for loads not greater than 10′ in width, 14′ in height or 90′ in length. Movement all day on Saturday, and until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday
Mobile/Modular homes are not eligible for weekend movement
Curfew from 7am - 9am & 3pm - 6pm in the following counties:
Genesee, Ingham, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kent, Muskegon, Macomb, Oakland, Saginaw, Wayne & Westenau
Travel prohibited on New Years Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day
Permit office is closed for the above holidays plus Martin Luther King Day, Lincoln's Birthday, Veteran's Day, the day after Thanksgiving Day and the day after Christmas Day

Over 12′ to 14′ wide requires 1 pilot car
Over 14′ wide requires 2 pilot cars
Over 14′ 5″ high requires 1 pilot car with height pole
Over 15′ high requires 2 pilot cars, 1 with height pole
90′ to 100′ long requires 1 pilot car
Over 100′ long requires 2 pilot cars
Over 15′ overhang requires 1 pilot car
Mobile Homes/Modular Loads:
12′ to 14′ wide requires 1 pilot car

Michigan Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Passenger car or pickup truck
"OVERSIZE LOAD" sign (5′ X 12″) with black letters (8″ high) on yellow background, mounted on the roof of vehicle
At least one flashing / rotating amber light on top of vehicle and visible for 500′
No stipulations found concerning flags
A height pole is required for loads in excess of 14′ 6″

Michigan Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Trucks are prohibited in the "hammer lane"
