Massachusetts Oversize Load / Pilot Car Requirements
Commercial Motor Vehicle Information

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 50' 0" (with restrictions -  Visit Oversize Permit Manual)
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (22,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
All over-dimensional and overweight vehicles with a permit may travel from Monday morning 12:01 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. (Noon) on Saturday except for special exceptions
Vehicles between 12' and 14' wide, over 80' but not exceeding 114' in length and over 13' 11" height may travel under permit only during daylight house (sunrise and sunset) except that no such travel shall be allowed between the hours of 7:00 A.M. - 9:00 A.M. and 3:30 P.M. - 7:00 P.M., Monday through Friday
Saturday and Sunday until 12:00 P.M. (Noon)
Vehicle over 14' wide, and/or over 115' long may travel between hours of 9:30 A.M. - 3:30 P.M. and only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
Travel prohibited on New Years Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day (starts at noon the day preceding the holiday and ends at noon the day following the holiday)

80′ - 95′ long requires 1 pilot car
Over 95′ long requires 2 pilot cars
Over 115′ long requires 2 pilot cars & Ma State Police
12′ to 13′ 6″ long requires 1 pilot car
Over 13′ 6″ wide requires 2 pilot cars
Over 13′ 6″ high (depending on route) requires 1 pilot car
Over 13′ 11″ high (depending on route) requires 2 pilot cars
Over 13′ 8″ high requires a route survey
In Boston, Ma
If over legal dimensions at least 1 pilot car is required and usually the city police
On Massachusetts Turnpike
Over 12′ wide requires 1 pilot car
Over 13′ wide requires 2 pilot cars
Over 15′ wide requires 2 pilot cars & 2 police escorts
Over 80′ long requires 1 pilot car

Two flashing amber lights visible from front and rear
24″ square red flags mounted on the right and left rear of vehicle
No additional equipment stipulated in regulations

Massachusetts Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Trucks are prohibited in the "hammer lane"
