When Permits are Required

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 0" (Over 8' 6" on Class 1 & Class 2 highways)
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 53' 0"
Weight: Over 73,280 lbs. GVW (18,000 lbs. single axle or 32,000 lbs. tandem axle)
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW on Class 1,2 and 3 highways

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset (Monday - Friday)
1/2 hour before sunrise until noon on Saturday
Travel prohibited on New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day
Permit office is closed on the above holidays plus Martin Luther King Day, Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Columbus Day, Election Day, Veteran's Day & the day after Thanksgiving Day

Illinois Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
1 Pilot Car Required:
For all moves that exceed 14′ 6″ in width or 14′ 6″ in height or 110′ in length
2 Pilot Cars Required:
Moves that exceed 16′ in height, or exceed both 14′ 6″ in width & 14′ 6″ in height
Interstate Highways:
3 Pilot Cars Required:
Moves exceeding 16′ wide or 145′ long
All special haul rigs more than 150′ long

Moves exceeding 18′ wide, 175′ long, 18′ high or 230,000 lbs.
For overweight moves where bridge restrictions require that all traffic be kept clear while the permitted vehicle crosses over
Farm equipment does not require a permit, but escorts may still be required

Illinois Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Passenger car or a second division vehicle not to exceed 8,000 lbs. GVW
Minimum insurance of $500, 000 per occurrence combined bodily injury & property damage
Sign measuring 5′ X 12″ with black letters (8″ high X 1.41 stroke) on yellow background stating "OVERSIZE LOAD"
Flashing or rotating amber lights top mount
Red flags at the extremeties
A non metallic height pole if escorting high loads
Two way radio

Illinois Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
18 years of age with a valid drivers license
