Iowa General Provisions for Oversize Load Permit

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 53' 0"
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset
Under 11′ wide, 14′ 4″ high or 100′ long may travel 24/7
Travel prohibited on Memorial Day, Independence Day & Labor Day (beginning at noon on the last weekday preceeding the holiday, including holidays that fall on Monday)
Curfew on I-235 in Des Moines from 7am - 9am & from 4pm - 6pm (M - F)

Find a Pilot Car Provider in Iowa
Iowa Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
Height exceeding 14′ 4″ up to 20′ on all highways requires 1 pilot car with height pole
Over 20′ high requires 1 pilot car (no height pole required)
Over 16′ high load must contact the power & utility companies and they must accompany the load or carrier must carry a "letter of clearance" issued by them
Over 120′ long requires 1 pilot car
If width exceeds 1/2 roadway up to and including 14′ 6″ on 2 lane highway 1 pilot car required
If width exceeds 1/2 roadway up to and including 14′ 6″ on 4 lane highway or interstate 1 pilot car required (or amber flash/strobe light)
Over 14′ 6″ to 16′ 6″ wide requires 1 pilot car (or amber flash/strobe light)
Over 16′ 6″ to 18′ wide requires 1 pilot car

Iowa Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Mid size auto or truck
"OVERSIZE LOAD" sign at least 18″ X 7′ with a minimum of 12″ black letters, with a 1½″ brush stroke, on a yellow background and mounted on both the front and rear bumpers of the vehicle
An amber revolving light at least 7″ high and 7″ in diameter with at least a 100 candlepower lamp providing 360 degree visability. A light of smaller dimensions is prohibited unless a strobe light is used
Mobile homes must display amber strobe/revolving light on rear of load and on towed vehicle
An 18″ X 18″ red or orange flag mounted on each corner of the front bumper of the escort vehicle
Must have radio communication with permitted vehicle and/or load

Iowa Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Age 18 or over with a Class A, B, C or D driver's license which allows driving unaccompanied
Carry proof of public liability insurance in the amounts of $100,000 / $200,000 / $50,000
Iowa General Provision Sheet stapled to the Oversize/Overweight permit
