Florida Oversize Load / Pilot Car Requirements
Overdimensional Roaduse Permits

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6" (8' 0" on lanes less than 12')
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailers from 48′ to 53′ cannot exceed 41′ from kingpin to center of rear axle or rear group of axles, underride protection in rear of trailer
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (22,000 lbs. single axle or 44,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hr after sunset, M - F; Sat & Sun 1/2 hr before sunrise to noon
Weekend travel allowed for overweight only
Travel prohibited on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independance Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day & days of observation other than calender date as well as additional days of observation

Find a Pilot Car Provider in Florida
Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
2 lane highways:
Over 12' up to 14′ wide (if pavement is 24′ or more wide) requires 1 pilot car
Over 12' wide (if pavement is less than 24′ wide) requires 2 pilot cars
Over 14' to 15′ wide (each lane must be 12′ wide) requires 2 pilot cars
75' to 95' long may require 1 pilot car
Over 95' long requires 1 pilot car
14' 6″ high and over requires 2 pilot cars, lead with height pole
4 lane highways:
Over 12″ to 14′ wide requires 1 pilot car
Over 14″ to 15′ wide requires 2 pilot cars
75′ to 95′ long may require 1 pilot car
Over 14′ 6″ high requires 1 pilot car
Over 16′ high requires 2 pilot cars, lead with height pole

Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Vehicle 2000 lbs - 15,000 lbs GVW, licensed and operated by a qualified escort / pilot
Bumper or roof mounted sign "OVERSIZE LOAD" in 10″ high w/ brush stroke 1 1/2″ wide black letters on a yellow background, both front and back
Placards or signs (8″ X 12″ min) on both sides of vehicle showing the name of company, Owner or driver of vehicle with the name & phone number of owner / driver
Class 2 amber warning lights, SAEJ845 or SAEJ1318
2 flags (red or fluorescent orange) 12″ X 12″ min. mounted at a 40 - 70 degree angle on roof rack
2-way communications device
2 five pound fire extinguishers
Stop / Slow or Stop / Go paddle (18″ X 18″ with 6″ high letters
Safety orange vest / shirt / jacket
Hand held traffic flag 12″ X 12″ (red or fluorescent orange)
Two extra "OVERSIZE LOAD" banners (yellow with black letters) in case permitted load / vehicle loses its sign
Three reflective triangles
Three 18″ traffic cones
Height pole if intending to escort a high load

Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Florida law enforcement officer in enforcement vehicle
Person meeting the following requirements:
Successfully completed the FDOT Pilot/Escort flagging course.
Holding a valid CDL class A, B, or C or successfully completed the NSC 8-hour Defensive Driving course
Minimum age of 18
Qualified by another State's authorizing agency
