Connecticut Oversize Load / Pilot Car Requirements
OVERSIZE / OVERWEIGHT VEHICLE PERMIT REGULATIONS

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 13' 6"
Length: Semi-trailer over 48' 0"
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (22,400 lbs. single axle or 36,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
No permittee shall move his vehicle(s) and load except during daylight hours (one-half hour after sunrise to one-half hour before sunset) unless he obtains special permission, before the move, from the Commissioner of Transportation and if weather and highway conditions are favorable
Permits may limit the hours or days of travel depending upon local highway and traffic conditions
Permits will not be issued for the movement of oversize or overweight vehicles or combinations of vehicle and load on Saturdays, Sundays, or Holidays. Holiday restrictions may include a period of time before and after each holiday. A list of these holiday periods shall be published annually by the Department of Transportation and can be obtained by contacting the MTSU

Connecticut Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
Over 14′ high requires 1 pilot car with height pole
Over 15′ high & 15′ wide requires 3 pilot cars
Divided highways:
Over 12′ wide, 120′ long and mobile homes under 12′ wide require 1 pilot car
Over 13′ 6″ wide, 120′ long and mobile homes over 12′ wide or 85′ long requires 2 pilot cars
Undivided highways:
12′ wide and under, over 80′ long, mobile homes 10′ wide or under, or over 80′ long requires 1 pilot car
Over 12′ wide, over 100′ long and mobile homes over 10′ wide or over 85′ long require 2 pilot cars

Connecticut Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Vehicle with a max capacity of 1½ ton and 60″ width or greater
"OVERSIZE LOAD FOLLOWING", "OVERSIZE LOAD AHEAD", "WIDE LOAD AHEAD", "WIDE LOAD FOLLOWING", "LONG LOAD AHEAD", "LONG LOAD FOLLOWING" sign, mounted a minimum of 48″ above roadway on yellow background and black letters 8" high minimum
Top mounted flashing or rotating amber lights visable for a minimum of 1000′
Flags on the front or rear corners of vehicle, whichever is appropriate, 18″ square
CB or two way radio communication between escort and load
Red hand signal flag
Red vest or jacket

Connecticut Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
No requirements noted in rules & regulations
Trucks are not allowed in the "hammer lane"
