Rules and Regulations for Transport Permits

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 13' 0" (14' 6" on State designated highways only)
Length: Semi-trailer over 57' 4"
Weight: Over 85,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 40,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
24/7 and on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day for vehicles less than 14' wide
Super Loads prohibited on weekends or according to permit

Colorado Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
Passenger vehicle or 2 axle truck with a maximum GVW of 16,000 lbs. 60″ or greater
$1,000,000.00 single limit combined insurance.
identification signs / placards on both sides of vehicle
"OVERSIZE LOAD", "WIDE LOAD", "LONG LOAD" sign, top mount only, visable from front & rear. must be a minimum of 5′ wide, 10" high on a yellow background and black letters. 1" wide brush stroke, 8" high
Two additional "OVERSIZE LOAD" signs
Flashing yellow or amber lights visable from front and rear. Visable at 500′ in normal sunlight from 360 degrees. Roof or top mount
Minimum of 1 red or orange flag on top of each side of vehicle
A height pole made of non conductive material for loads over 16′
CB or two way radio mounted in vehicle with a minimum range of ½ mile
Two hand held CB or two-way radios
One 5 lb. B,C fire extinguisher
Three 18″ high (minimum) Orange Traffic Cones
Nine bi-directional emergency reflective triangles
Eight road flares or glow sticks
A standard 18″ stop / slow paddle
A class2, type2 reflective orange vest (must be worn while directing traffic)
An orange or white hard hat (must be worn when outside vehicle)
One flashlight that uses 2 d-cell batteries with 2 extra batteries on hand and a 9″ red/orange wand

Colorado Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years of age
Current Colorado certification or other accepted State
No passengers under 16 years of age allowed
