California Oversize Load / Pilot Car Requirements
California Transportation Permits Manual

Oversize Load Permit Is Required:
Width: Over 8' 6"
Height: Over 14' 0"
Length: 38' maximum length as measured from kingpin to center of rear axle on single axle trailers
               40' maximum length as measured from kingpin to center of rear axle on 2 or more axle trailers
Weight: Over 80,000 lbs. GVW (20,000 lbs. single axle or 34,000 lbs. tandem axle)

Oversize Load Times Of Movement:
24/7 unless an escort is required, load exceeds a 2 vehicle configuration, exceeds green loading weight or a detour is required - then travel is restricted to ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset.
Travel prohibited (unless exempted by permit) on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day.
If a holiday falls on a friday or Monday, travel is prohibited during the weekend.
Loads over 10′ wide are restricted from traveling Monday / Friday during the following times:
Los Angeles & surrounding areas: 6am - 9am and 3pm - 6pm
Sacramento & surrounding areas: 7am - 9am and 4pm - 6pm
San Diego & surrounding areas: 7am - 9am and 4pm - 6pm
San Francisco & surrounding areas: 7am - 9am and 4pm - 6pm
San Francisco / Oakland Bay Bridge: 6:30am - 9am and 3:30pm - 6:30pm
CHP is required for loads over 15′ wide on 2 lane and 16′ on yellow routes

California Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle is Required:
2 Lanes:

Over 12' wide requires 1 or 2 pilot cars (depending on route)
Over 85' to 135' long (over 100' in LA county & LA city) requires 2 pilot cars
Overhang (front & rear) 25' or greater requires 1 pilot car or more
Over 16' high must obtain special approval
Check permit for escort requirements, depending on location, may require pilot car for under 12' wide
Pilot car maps may be downloaded from the CALTRANS website
Height Poles are not a CALTRANS requirement. If requested by a permittee, a pilot car will be permitted and identified as a permittee request

California Pilot Car Vehicle Requirments:
An automobile with a width of not less than 60″
"OVERSIZE LOAD" sign must be a minimum of 48″ from ground and be legible at 45 degrees from either side front & back, yellow background and black letters (1 5/8" brush stroke) which are 6" high minimum
Flashing amber warning lights visable a full 360 degrees
Warning lights, flags & signs must be removed or covered when the pilot car is not being operated as an escort vehicle
Minimum of 1 red warning flag on each side of vehicle. Must be at least 16" square and visable from the front and rear
A two-way radio / communications device
A stop / slow paddle
An orange vest / shirt / jacket
A red emergency flag 24″ square

California Pilot Car Operator Requirements:
California oversize load publication must be carried with you at all times
Trucks are not allowed in the "hammer Lane" at any time
